The Hasler Series

The Hasler Series

The Hasler Series is the foundation of canoe marathon racing in the UK and where generations of paddlers have taken their first steps into the sport. Taking place on rivers and waterways across the country, it brings together paddlers of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners and junior athletes to veteran racers and international competitors. Whether your goal is to race for fun, challenge yourself over longer distances, or represent your club at the highest level of domestic competition, the Hasler Series offers a place to start.

Named after Major Herbert “Blondie” Hasler DSO OBE, the pioneering canoeist, adventurer and Royal Marines officer who led the famous Operation Frankton raid during the Second World War, the series celebrates both endurance and teamwork. The Hasler Trophy itself was presented to commemorate Operation Frankton and has been competed for since 1957, making it one of the longest-running team competitions in British paddlesport.

A typical Hasler race is about far more than simply paddling from start to finish. Competitors must combine endurance, tactics and multiple different skills to navigate courses that often include turns, portages and group racing with other boats. Depending on ability and division, race distances vary, allowing both newcomers and experienced racers to compete in events suited to their level.

One of the strengths of the Hasler Series is its division structure. Paddlers compete against others of a similar standard and can earn promotion as their performances improve. This creates a clear pathway for progression, helping paddlers develop their skills and confidence while ensuring competitive racing throughout the field. Competitors can race in kayaks or canoes, either as singles or doubles crews, and regular participation can see paddlers move steadily through the divisions towards the highest divisions.

While individual racing is important, the Hasler Series is fundamentally built around clubs. Throughout the season, clubs compete at regional Hasler races, earning points through the performances of their paddlers. Every competitor has the opportunity to contribute to their club’s score, creating a unique atmosphere where all play a role in their club’s performances.

The season culminates in the Hasler Final, one of the highlights of the British canoe marathon calendar. The highest-performing clubs from each region qualify to compete for the prestigious Hasler Trophy, awarded to the club that demonstrates the greatest strength and depth across across multiple divisions.

Alongside the main club trophy, indidividual trophies are also awarded at the Hasler Final:

  • Adam Thomasson Trophy – Awarded to the winner of the Division 2 race.
  • Ross Warland Memorial Trophy – Awarded to the highest-placed junior in the Division 4 race.
  • Committee Cup – Awarded to the highest-placed junior woman in the highest kayak division.
  • Ken Pereira Cup – Awarded to the highest-placed junior canoe paddler in the highest division.
  • Rhodes White Trophy – Awarded to the fastest senior man over the 12 mile distance.
  • David Shankland Trophy – Awarded to the fastest female paddler over the 12 mile distance.
  • Barber Trophy – Awarded to the fastest junior over the 12 mile distance.
  • Bill Sparks Trophy – Awarded to the highest-placed veteran K2 crew in the highest division.

More than 65 years on, the Hasler Series continues to bring paddlers and clubs together. From first-time racers to international athletes, it remains the cornerstone of canoe marathon racing in the UK.
