What is Canoe Marathon?

Canoe Marathon is a fast-paced endurance paddlesport that takes place on rivers, lakes and canals across the UK. Whether you’re looking for a new challenge, want to improve your fitness, or enjoy competitive sport, canoe marathon offers something for everyone.

Races range from a few kilometres for beginners to some of the toughest endurance events in the world, including the famous Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race, which covers 125 miles from Wiltshire to central London.

Despite its name, canoe marathon is much more than simply paddling long distances. Races often involve groups of competitors racing together, using tactics, pacing and positioning to gain an advantage. Many races are decided by exciting sprint finishes, making the sport as tactical as it is physically demanding.

One of the unique features of canoe marathon in the UK is its division-based racing system. Competitors race against paddlers of a similar ability level, meaning complete beginners can get involved and compete from their very first race. As skills and fitness improve, paddlers are promoted through the divisions and can eventually compete against some of the best athletes in Britain and around the world.

The sport is also far more accessible than many people expect. Beginner racing boats are stable, easy to paddle and suitable for learning the basics of racing. As paddlers progress, they can move into faster, narrower boats that reward greater skill and technique.

Canoe marathon has often been described as combining the endurance of distance running with the tactics of road cycling. Success depends not only on fitness but also on race awareness, boat handling skills and decision-making under pressure.

There are canoe racing clubs across the UK offering coaching, equipment, beginner sessions and opportunities to race. Many clubs support both marathon and sprint racing, allowing paddlers to experience different aspects of competitive canoeing.

The sport caters for all ages and abilities, from juniors taking part in their first event to masters/veteran athletes competing well into later life. Races are held throughout the year, with a busy calendar of regional and national championship events between March and October.

For those who want to progress further, Canoe Marathon provides opportunities to compete at national championships, represent Great Britain internationally, and race at European and World Championship events.

Whether your goal is to complete your first race, improve your fitness, challenge yourself over longer distances or compete internationally, Canoe Marathon offers a welcoming community and a clear pathway to help you achieve it.
