The organisers of the 2024 World Championships have released the first bulletin for the Masters programme of events. This can be downloaded using the below link.
Any questions on Masters racing should be directed to our Masters lead Bryn Price via his email.
Following the Assessment Race on Saturday 23rd March, the Selection Committee met to complete the selections for the World Cup, Waterlands and University Worlds. The Selection Committee would like to thank Norwich Club for hosting the first assessment of 2024. The wind was very strong but despite this, the starts were well executed and there was a really positive spirit on this day of racing.
Please see below to see the full selection note and statement from the Selection Committee.
We would like to congratulate the athletes on their selections to their respective teams.
Finally, we would like to thank Norwich, all the athletes and supporters for fantastic day of racing.
For those Masters considering entering the 2024 World Cup Masters event in Brandenburg, please see the attached bulletin and entry form.
As with previous internationals, there is the option of Masters boats being taken on the main team trailer if space allows. This will be at an additional cost.
Any questions, please contact our Masters Racing Lead Bryn Price here.
On very short notice we have been made aware of an exciting opportunity to race Canoe Marathon at the World University Canoe games in Portugal on the 24th August.
A team of up to 8 athletes will be selected to complete in the following classes: C1W 12km, C1M 16km, K1W 16km, K1M 20km.
BUCS manage the entries and have requested the athlete nominations be completed by 30th March and delegates pay in full by the 12th May. Due to this tight enforced deadline, the only assessment to make the athlete selections is this Saturday, 23rd March, at the K1 / C1 Assessment in Norwich. We apologise for the short notice, however, this was unforeseen and the Selection Committee was keen to offer athletes the opportunity to represent at this event.
All athletes seeking selection must take note of the following:
Enter and complete at the K1 / C1 assessment on the 23rd March. Entries can be found here: Norwich Assessment Entries
Complete an athlete availability form by 22:00 on the 23rd March. The form can be found here
Complete a BUCS athlete nomination form by the 30th March. The form can be found here
For full information, please refer to the selection policy as published (link above). If you still have any questions, please direct them to the Chair of the Selection Committee, Nanette North: marathon.selectors@vol.paddleuk.org.uk

Following the decision by the MRC to standardise the Great British race vests for all paddlers racing at marathon internationals, we need to know who is planning to race at any of the following international events this year:
Waterlands Marathon
World Cup in Brandenburg, Germany
European Masters Marathon Championships in Poland
Worlds Masters Marathon Championships in Croatia
Please let Bryn Price, our Masters Racing lead, know if you are planning to attend any of the above and your vest and shirt size.
The MRC Selection Policy has been published for consultation. You are invited to review the document and share your feedback. Consultation closes at 12:00 noon on the Friday 2nd February 2024.
The Marathon Racing Committee, Sprint Racing Committee and BC Talent Department are excited to announce the sign-up for the second JDS Winter Series 2023/24 day is now open.
Run from Papercourt Lake, near Guildford, the day is a K2/C2 day with both sessions led by Ivan Lawler. The day will focus on marathon skills, with the sessions seeking to develop portaging, turns and wash hanging skills, amongst others!Â
For more information about the JDS, including entry criteria and to sign up please click HERE. As a reminder, the cost is £10. Sign up closes on Friday 24th November at 17:00. Late entries won’t be accepted.  Please also check the criteria for athletes attending and if in doubt, contact Charlie Barwis and Holly Mobbs using the emails on the website.
Please note that because of a technical issue with our membership platform, after completing sign up using the link above, you will be contacted directly via email to provide some further information which we require ahead of the event and cannot currently collect. We would appreciate it if you could complete this ASAP and ahead of the closing deadline of Friday 24th November.
Coaches are also encouraged to sign-up to support the day but also gain some CPD by working with other coaches as well as our coach developer, Scott Hynds. There will be an additional online coaches briefing in advance of the day on Tuesday 28th November at 19:30.
This year the British Masters Team was made up of 34 paddlers, even bigger than the 30 paddlers we had in Portugal in 2022. The growth doesn’t seem to be just for our team either! The number of paddlers entered and racing was far bigger than in most of the recent World Masters Championships, with many of the starts having over 30 paddlers on the start line and causing some very intense racing!
Similar to last year when Denmark hosted the European Championships, the weather was un-predictable. Monday was windy and Tuesday was rainy, with short sharp showers in the afternoon.
As typical, the Monday was dedicated to the K1 races and we soon showed that our strength was not only in numbers. Brian Greenham (Reading Canoe Club) got the Gold in the Men’s 70 -74 K1 with Gilbert Speirs (Linlithgow Kayak Racing) winning the bronze medal.
Not to be out-done, Edgar Boehm (Reading Canoe Club) got the Bronze in the Men’s K1 45-59 category.
Edgar Boehm (Reading) racing for his bronze medal
Tuesday saw the K2 and C2 races. Edgar Boehm (Reading Canoe Club) and Juan Abellanas (Barking & Dagenham Canoe Club) showed the way with a gold medal in the 35-39 Men’s K2 race after a dominant performance.
Our team was made up of some experienced British Masters paddlers and boosted by some of our International novice paddlers who showed that they were equal to the challenge. We were honoured to have Ivan Lawler (Elmbridge Canoe Club) join us on the water as well, when his commentating duties permitted.
